Water Island, the smallest of the four main islands in the USVI, is located a short ferry ride away from St. Thomas. This small residential island is only 491 acres, and is easy to explore by foot, bike, or golf cart! For more information on rentals and tours, contact our concierge! The activities coordinators at Bolongo Bay are always willing to help plan a fun day trip! The ferry departs St. Thomas from Crown Bay, one of the island’s cruise ship ports. The 5 minute ferry ride brings you to Phillips Landing, which is a short walk from beautiful Honeymoon Beach. This idyllic spot is perfect for spending a relaxing afternoon lounging in the sand, snorkeling in the clear blue water, or hanging out at one of the fun beach bars.
There is something for everyone to enjoy on Water Island, whether you are visiting for day or just the afternoon. The island has a population of less than 200 people, and was transferred to the local government as recently as December of 1996! If you are looking for an opportunity to truly get away from it all, this is the place to go! There are hiking paths around the island, shorelines to explore, old military fortifications to discover, kayak rentals, fishing and boating excursions, and of course, the popular Water Island Movie Night. Visitors and locals alike gather every Monday evening, just before the sun sets, at Heidi’s Honeymoon Grill on Honeymoon Beach. They set up a huge projection screen between two palm trees and feature a different movie every week! Heidi’s has food and drinks for sale, and the ferry to and from St. Thomas will make special trips before and after the screening!
Water Island is truly magical, and whether you are vacationing in the USVI or living here, don’t miss out on exploring what this hidden gem has to offer! But let’s just say you’ve run out of time, or you can’t make it over on the ferry… don’t miss the opportunity to see Water Island by sea! The Heavenly Days catamaran at Bolongo Bay offers an amazing sunset sail that will bring you along the northern coast of Water Island! 😉
